NEWS:

  • On June 17th, 2007, B.A.G.G. Ladies Kitty Welch & Beth Gehred attended the Midwest Renewable Energy Fair in Custer, WI. They were able to share the wonderful stories about Fort Atkinson and the Atkinson Diet Carbon Stars as well as gain new knowledge about sustainability efforts in the Midwest.
  • Local Fort citizen and daughter of Carbon Stars Ric & Kelly, Jillian Rowley appeared in The Wisconsin State Journal in June, as she and other volunteers from WISPIRG placed 156 pinwheels on Library Mall. The pinwheels helped illustrate how many wind turbines could provide all of Madison's electricy needs for a year. The display was part of a promotion of renewable energy and support for congressional action to increase renewable energy use.
  • The Atkinson Diet hosts Ride for Climate cyclists June 6, 2007. Visit their Wisconsin blog at www.rideforclimate.com
  • The Atkinson Diet hosts Step It Up local global warming initiative Saturday April 14th. www.stepitup2007.org
  • Heart of the City and Jefferson County Parks Department partner to create community gardens at the Mason Farm.
  • Fort Atkinson City Council passed the global warming Resolution 1118 March 20, 2007.
  • Fort Atkinson City Manager, John Wilmet, interviewed on Channel 15 News Madison for their coverage about the passage of the Global Warming Resolution.
  • In November 2007 Heart of the City and the Atkinson Diet partnered with the VyMac Corporation, the Verlo Mattress Factory Stores, and the Verlo Store of Fort Atkinson to donate $1200 to the city of Fort Atkinson for the purchase of green LED lightbulbs for one intersection, "giving the city the green light to save energy". (LED lightbulbs use about 1/80th of the energy of incandescents.)
  • In fall of 2007 when the city of Fort Atkinson provided new trash cans for residents, Heart of the City (HOC) saved the cans from becoming trash. HOC is working with the schools to put artwork on them and turn them into recycling bins for place in the city and at the schools which do not have any.

  • The Daily Jefferson County Union has been featuring weekly Letters to the Editor and Editorials about The Atkinson Diet, Global Warming and opposition opinions.
  • The Fort Atkinson Step It Up Campaign highlighted on The Daily Jefferson County Union with a full-page photo spread.
  • The Atkinson Diet featured in Bill McKibben's Monday March 26th 2007 Blog.
  • Kitty Welch, Atkinson Dieter, was a call-in on Joy Cardin's Wisconsin Public Radio March 26, 2007 show with Bill McKibben, founder of Step It Up Campaign, author of "Deep Economy" and professor at Middlebury College in Vermont.   • A full page article of The Atkinson Diet featured in Monday March 12, 2007 issue of The Daily Jefferson County Union
  • Kitty Welch phoned in to "At Issue with Ben Merens" on Wisconsin Public Radio February 27, 2007. Guet Kate Zyla, Senior Research Fellow for Domestic Policy, Pew Center on Global Climate Change shares what you can do to decrease the impact of global warming. Listen.
  • Kitty Welch was a guest on Fort Atkinson local radio program The Morning Show with Michael Clish on WFAW 94.0 AM, February 23rd, 2007.
  • The Atkinson Diet featured in a front-page article in the Wisconsin State Journal November 27, 2007.
  • The Atkinson Diet featured- people making a difference- in the January/February 2008 issue of Wisconsin Trails .
  • The Atkinson Diet listed as #21 of 25 Green Heroes- "25 of the area's savviest, smartest, boldest, well-intentioned and hardest-working stewards of justice, humanity and the environment"
    in Madison Magazine's April 2008 edition.
